We’re located about 20 minutes east of downtown Ottawa. Take the #417 (Queensway) east to route #174 towards Orleans. Just past the Place d’Orleans shopping centre turn south at the Tenth Line Road turn off and then continue south on Tenth Line Road to the Ray Friel Centre. The library and the local history room are located there. Contact the library at (613) 830-5422 for further directions if necessary.

Une fois passé le centre d’achats Place d’Orléans prenez le Tenth Line Rd et suivez-le jusqu’au centre Friel. Composez le 613 830 5422 pour communiquer avec le personnel de la bibliothèque.

Our Society

The Cumberland Township Historical Society is a non-profit, volunteer and community-based organization whose goal is to preserve Cumberland Township history. This goal is especially important in light of the fact that as of January 1st, 2001, the City of Cumberland ceased to exist. At that time the Municipality of Cumberland merged with 10 other local municipalities to become the new City of Ottawa. The rural Cumberland area is now referred to as Cumberland Ward 19. The urban Cumberland and Gloucester areas are now referred to as Orléans ward.

To help keep our local history alive and of value to our members, the executive hosts meetings throughout the year where members and guest speakers engage in often lively discussion on a variety of topics of local historical significance. Since 1988 we’ve published the Society’s newsletter – The Caboose – now four times each year, copies of which you can view from our web site. Our local history room (Cumberland branch, Ottawa Public Library) contains family and parish records, maps, periodicals and other historical documents.

Notre société

Nous sommes une organisation communautaire à but non-lucratif composée de volontaires qui oeuvrent à préserver l’histoire du canton de Cumberland. Notre travail est d’autant plus important du fait que la municipalité de Cumberland cesse d’exister depuis le premier janvier 2001. C’est alors que notre municipalité ainsi que dix autres ont été absorbées dans la nouvelle ville d’Ottawa. La partie rurale du canton de Cumberland est devenue le secteur Cumberland 19 et la partie urbaine des cantons de Cumberland et de Gloucester est devenue le secteur Orléans.

Afin de maintenir une présence historique locale intéressante et appréciée par nos membres, notre exécutif organise des présentations au cours de chaque année. Depuis 1988, nous publions notre revue – The Caboose – maintenant quatre fois par année, dont les éditions passées se retrouvent sur notre site Web. Notre salle d’histoire située dans la succursale Cumberland de la Bibliothèque publique d’Ottawa conserve des dossiers de famille et de paroisse, des anciennes périodiques et une variété d’autres documents historiques.
